Best time to post on Instagram: how to find yours
There is no single best time for every account. Here is how to find the hours when your own followers are active, day by day, and post at them consistently.
By PostVIA Team

Short answer: in Buffer's analysis of 9.6 million Instagram posts (published September 2026), the top three slots were Thursday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at 12 p.m. and Wednesday at 6 p.m., and Wednesday was the best day overall. Evenings worked best on most days. But your own followers decide your best time: use the study as a starting point, check your Instagram Insights and test a few slots for two to four weeks.
Why there is no universal best time
General "best time" charts average millions of accounts. A local bakery, a gaming creator and a B2B brand have followers who open Instagram at very different moments. Time zones shift the picture further: 9:00 in New York is 15:00 in Berlin.
So treat any general advice as a starting point, and let your own numbers decide.
Find your followers' most active hours
If you use a professional account (Business or Creator), Instagram shows when your followers are active:
- Open your profile and tap Professional dashboard or Insights.
- Open Total followers and scroll to Most active times.
- Switch between Hours and Days to see which hours and which days your followers use Instagram the most.
Pick the two or three busiest hours as your first test slots. Post a little before the peak, so the post is already there when people open the app.
Best time to post on Instagram by day of the week
These are the top slots reported for each day in Buffer's study. Treat them as your audience's local time and as a starting point for your own test.
- Monday: 7 p.m., then 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
- Tuesday: 7 p.m., then 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. — the third-strongest day.
- Wednesday: 12 p.m., then 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. — the best day of the week.
- Thursday: 9 a.m., then 8 a.m. and 7 a.m. — the only weekday where mornings beat evenings.
- Friday: 10 p.m., then 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. — one of the two weakest days.
- Saturday: 9 p.m., then 10 p.m. and 8 p.m. — the other weakest day.
- Sunday: 9 p.m., then 10 p.m. and 8 p.m. — the strongest weekend window.
Best days: Wednesday, then Thursday and Tuesday. Weakest days: Friday and Saturday — keep your most important posts for midweek.
Write down the reach, likes, comments, saves and shares of each post after 48 hours. After two to four weeks you will see which slots work for your account.
Stories, Reels and feed posts
Stories disappear after 24 hours, so their timing is less critical: post them throughout the day when you have something to share. Reels can keep getting views for days, but the first hours still help them get started. For feed posts and Reels, use the slots from your test.
Post at the right time without being online
The best hour is not always a convenient one. Scheduling lets you prepare posts when you have time and publish them when your followers are active.
With PostVIA you can:
- create a post with an image, a carousel or a video and give Instagram its own caption;
- choose the date and time in your time zone and schedule it;
- see all scheduled posts in the calendar and drag a post to another slot while you test;
- publish the same post to Facebook, Threads and other networks in the same step.
FAQ
What is the best time to post on Instagram today?
Open Most active times in Instagram Insights and pick today's busiest hours. Post shortly before the peak.
How often should I post on Instagram?
Consistency matters more than volume. Choose a rhythm you can keep for months — for example three feed posts a week — and schedule it ahead.
Does posting at the best time guarantee more reach?
No. Timing helps a post get its first views, but the content, the caption and how people react decide the rest.
